Scouting network set-up by academy

A scouting network will be established in Bermuda to monitor the progress of national academy players and identify those who slipped through the net.

A team of up to three BFA scouts will run the rule over young talent in school and club matches starting from the next season in September, technical director Derek Broadley has confirmed.

Earlier this week the BFA sent out invitations for players to join the national academy, but Broadley still believes there is a wealth of talent on the Island that has not yet been tapped into.

"We need a specific team of scouts in Bermuda to look at players.

"At the moment the players we have invited to be part of the national academy are the best young players in Bermuda," he said.

"But I'm sure there are a number of other players who for whatever reason have not fallen under our radar yet.

"Players need to know that every time they step onto a football pitch someone is watching them and you never have a second chance to make a first impression."

Broadley said if a non-academy player sufficiently impressed a scout then he or she would be invited for a six-week trial at BFA Field.

"Scouts will also look for players to join the academy who were not initially identified and invite them for a further trial," said Broadley. "There are always some players who slip through the net.

"When a scout spots a player it won't be case of coming in straight away and they will be invited for a six-week trial and then gradually phased in.

"That's how this process works in Europe and the rest of the world."

Broadley added that academy players would sign up on a yearly basis and would not be removed unless they broke the terms of their BFA agreement.
