Selley follows in father's footsteps
Mark Selley jr. and Jordan Every marked their Round the Island powerboat race debut with a victory as they outlasted their nearest rivals to take line honours in their B-707 boat.
Anthony and Andy Stoneham in their powerful S-22 and Phillip and Perry DeSilva, riding in SD-33, rounded out the top three.
Selley, whose father is a previous winner of the event back in the 1970s, is continuing the family tradition and went as far as putting his father's former number on his boat.
In a new class, the Thundercats, the team of Jonathan Guagain and Luis Vieira won the inaugural race.
The boats weigh less than 300 pounds and are propelled through the water by a 50 horsepower engine at speeds of up to 55mph.
Race director for the event, Ernie Mello, was excited about the how the day transpired.
"The day was awesome, absolutely brilliant," said Mello. "The beach was packed with fans and supporters, and from the reports I received from the land based radio, there were a good bit of people.
"Having a rookie following in his father's footsteps and win his first Round the Island is something truly remarkable.
"All of the Selley boys finished one behind the other in different classes, so it was exciting to see how the day panned out.
"Other than our problem with marine traffic, which was an issue, the day was excellent. Thanks to the Bermuda Marine Services for doing what they could to make everyone safe on the water.
"Thanks also to our volunteers, who without them we wouldnt be able to do this, as well as Spanish Boat Club and Harbour Radio."
