Sims soars up the leaderboard
It might be too little, too late.
But a hugely impressive weekend has kept alive Michael Sims' hopes of playing in the Nationwide Tour's season-ending championship, a chance of retaining his Tour card and even an outside chance of joining next year's PGA Tour.
Having finished right on the cut line of one-under at the Soboba Classic in San Jacinto, California on Friday, the Bermudian pro suddenly found top gear on Saturday and kept his foot on the pedal yesterday, soaring up the leaderboard to the point, at press time last night, where he was in a tie for tenth place.
After rounds of plus-one 72 on Thursday and minus-two 69 on Friday to scrape into the weekend, Sims mastered the 7,075-yard, par 72 Country Club at Soboda Springs course over the next two rounds.
On Saturday, he fired a three-under 68 and repeated that score yesterday, making the biggest move of anyone in the field as he climbed more than 40 places.
It was all a far cry from Thursday when he ruined what might have been a solid round with a triple-bogey seven at the par-four seventh on the way to his one-over 71.
Earlier in the round at the par-four second, he had moved to two-under with a sensational eagle.
On Saturday he added another eagle at the par-five sixth in a round of three-under 68 which also included two birdies and just one bogey.
The 30-year-old made another fast start yesterday, making birdies at holes three, four, six and nine to make the turn at four-under 32. A one-over par back nine of 36 which included bogeys at 11 and 12, offset by a birdie at the par-three 13th, left him with at 68 for a 72-hole total of 277 (seven-under).
Back in the clubhouse, he was left waiting to see whether his last day score would keep him in the top ten, with several players still out on the course.
But whatever the outcome, he was guaranteed to make a handy cheque to add to the $63,264 already collected this season.
Although missing his last three cuts prior to this week's tournament, he remained 78th on the Tour moneylist. But he should improve on that ranking when the new moneylist is released today.
He needs to get into the top 60 in that list in order to play in the million dollar Tour Championship at the Daniel Island Club course in Charleston, South Carolina from October 22-25.
Before then there are just two more regular Nationwide Tour events, this week's Chattanooga Classic in Tennessee and then's next week's Miccosukee Championship in Miami.
If Sims is to avoid heading back to the early stages of PGA Tour School in November he will almost certainly have to make the cut in both of those events.
