Sluggo makes newspaper's top 50 for shocking stories

The catch that shook the earth: Dwayne Leverock dismisses India's Robin Uthappa at the 2007 World Cup.

Former Bermuda cricketer Dwayne (Sluggo) Leverock has been selected as one of the most unlikely sporting heroes of all-time by an English newspaper.

The larger than life spinner came in at number 21of the Daily Mail's top 50 list which celebrated the athletes behind the most shocking sporting stories.

Sluggo grabbed the international headlines at the 2007 World Cup with his brilliant diving catch to dismiss India's Robin Uthappa.

He also snapped up two key wickets in the warm-up match against England and continued to impress during the Island's three World Cup games in Trinidad.

The Daily Mail's Tom Bellwood said of Sluggo's cricketing exploits: "A monster of man, I'm not quite sure what to admire most – the fact that he played international cricket or that his weight hadn't caused him serious health issues.

"The 20st Bermudan spinner got Kevin Pietersen out at 2007 World Cup and took a brilliant diving catch to dismiss Robin Uthappa of India before dancing with joy.

"In even more remarkable news, Leverock once claimed a silver medal in the 110 metres hurdles at the Junior Caribbean Games as well as playing football at Hull City with Bermudian team (PHC) Zebras.

"Is there anything this man cannot do?"

It is not the first time the big man's surprising sporting prowess has been recognised.

During 2007's annual BBC Sportsmen of the Year Awards, watched by millions of viewers throughout Great Britain, Leverock featured prominently.

But predictably commentators, while admiring his athleticism, could not resist poking fun at cricket's heavyweight champ.

After showing footage of the brilliant diving catch by Sluggo to dismiss Uthappa off the first ball of 17-year-old Malachi Jones' first-ever World Cup over, former England football star Gary Lineker, now a BBC presenter, told the audience: "I think that's the first batsman to be caught at first, second and third slip."

Other athletes to make the Daily Mail's top 50 unlikely list were Buster Douglas who famously floored the 'baddest man on the planet' Mike Tyson, and William 'The Fridge' Perry who won Super Bowl XX as a defensive lineman with the Chicago Bears.
