Smith at the double as Village triumph
Pierre Smith fired North Village into the finals of the Friendship Cup at BAA last night as Shaun Goater's side kept their treble hopes alive with a battling win over Somerset Trojans.
The Village striker scored twice in a pulsating second half, and Ralph Bean Jr. added a third in the final minute to give the scoreline a slightly flattering look for the league leaders.
With the Dudley Eve trophy already to their name, and top of the league, last night's win set up a final against Southampton Rangers.
And if Village do come out of the season with three trophies, then striker Jason Lee will surely add Player of the Year to his collection.
Lee created two of his side's goals last night, and was a constant threat.
Not that Village had things all their own way, Trojans more than matched them for an hour, and will probably feel they should have done better.
The West End side created the best opening of a goalless first half, but Dwight Basden took one touch too many when one-on-one with Village goalkeeper Jason Williams.
They went behind against the run of play too, after Village broke quickly folllowing some concerted Trojans pressure, and Lee's cross was bundled home by Smith.
However, Trojans pressed again, and substitute Adrian Burrows deservedly dragged his side level eight minutes later when his harmless cross was missed by everyone, struck a post and dribbled past a disbelieving Williams.
Unfortunately for Trojans their impressive defending let them down less than a minute later and a mix-up between Desmond Burgess and goalkeeper Timmy Figureido allowed Smith to nip in and score his second.
From then they were always chasing the game, and Bean added a third as Trojans pushed for an equaliser.
In the Shield semi-final Prospect came from two-goals down to eventually beat Paget 3-2 after extra time in a thrilling game at BAA.
Two Kentoine Jennings penalties and a Jerome Laws strike were enough to cancel out goals from Paget's Kenneth Durrant and Kyhon Smith.
