Smith in trouble over ISL team row
Disgruntled Arsenal goalkeeper, Jason Smith, could be facing disciplinary action for breaching Island Soccer League (ISL) policy.
Earlier this week Smith vented his frustration over being removed from the ISL's protected list which resulted in him being drafted by Arsenal.
And his comments may have contravened the league's rigid code of conduct and will be reviewed by a disciplinary committee who ultimately decide whether or not to impose sanctions.
"This is something that will be discussed with our disciplinary committee. And if any disciplinary action takes place it would be a suspension because in most cases a player would be disciplined in some form," said Karl Roberts, ISL operations manager.
It is also understood that Smith's remarks have not gone down particularly well with Arsenal officials who may take action of their own.
In an interview with this newspaper, Smith complained about not being protected by his former ISL club, Union, after he was linked to a potential move to Bermuda Hogges. However, the move to Hogges never materialised and the player was eventually picked up by Arsenal, for whom he refuses to play.
"I don't want to play for Arsenal. I have a team (Union) that I was protected by," he said.
Roberts believes Smith's troubles could have been avoided altogether and has blamed the debacle on a "lack of communication" between the player and his former club.
"I think it is just a lack of communication and I informed the coaches about the process and the deadline, and they knew," he said. "But somewhere along the way communication broke down and as far as we are concerned Jason was listed with the Hogges when the deadline (protection deadline) had passed."
Smith's name was eventually put back into the ISL's draft pool after the protection deadline had expired, paving the way for Arsenal to secure his services for the 2009 campaign.
While Roberts sympathised withSmith's dilemma, he said he was shocked to learn of his outburst and reluctance to play for Arsenal this season after originally expressing a willingness to play for his new club.
"We've had conversations with Jason who pretty much accepted the fact and was gung-ho about playing for Arsenal in the ISL," he said. "As far as we are concerned he was quite thrilled about playing for Arsenal and helping them to progress to a possible ISL championship.
"I think the bottom line here is that this whole matter has been a learning process for everyone and I think our coaches and players will grow from this experience."
