Smith is invited to athletics World Cup

Tyrone Smith competes in the men's long jump final at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico earlier this month where he won the gold medal. Smith has been called up into the Americas Cup Team for the Continental Cup on the back of that performance.

Long jumper Tyrone Smith has leapt into the Americas Cup squad for next month's Continental Cup following his CAC Games gold medal heroics.

The Continental Cup is the only World Cup-style event contested by teams representing entire continents rather than individual nations.

Smith, 24, said he would be targeting another podium finish at the Continental Cup as he aims to maintain his medal-winning momentum ahead of the Commonwealth Games, held in Delhi, India in October.

"I'm excited, it's a huge team to make, to be considered as one of the top long jumpers not just in the Caribbean or North American but in the whole region," said Smith, who is competing at meets in Italy and Slovenia prior to the Continental Cup.

"It's a pretty big deal for me and I just want to go out there and win points for the team.

"It's been an exciting couple of weeks and I'm starting to see some dividends for my hard work.

"I want to keep my momentum going for the Commonwealth Games and obviously the Continental Cup would also be a nice title to have if I could place in the top three.

"At times it's been difficult since leaving school but now it's all paying off and I'm enjoyingbeing able to prove myself."

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson, said the Continental Cup call up was an 'unbelievable honour' for Smith, who became only the second Bermudian athlete to ever claim gold at the CAC Games by winning the men's long jump crown in Puerto Rico earlier this month.

He jumped his way into the history books with a personal best leap of 8.22 metres to follow in the footsteps of legendary high jumper Clarence (Nicky) Saunders who grabbed gold at the 1987 CAC Games.

Watson said: "What an unbelievable honour for Tyrone.

"Based on Tyrone's long jump performance at the CAC Games he has been invited to be part of the America's Cup competition.

"All in all we have had a great track season with Jeneko (Place) being selected for the America's team for the Youth Olympic Games and Tyrone for the America's team for the Continental Cup."

Formerly known as the IAAF World Cup, the Continental Cup event takes place every four years and sees teams from Africa, the Americas, Australasia and Europe compete against each other.

Croatia will host the Cup which runs September 4 and 5.
