Smith joins Powell in Americas Cup squad
Bermuda's Tyrone Smith will team up with household names Asafa Powell, Walter Dix and David Oliver in the Americas Cup squad at next month's Continental Cup.
Smith, 24, was called up to the Americas Cup team following his gold medal victory in the long jump at the CAC Games in Puerto Rico earlier this month.
The Continental Cup is the only World Cup-style event contested by teams representing entire continents rather than individual nations, and will take place in Croatia from September 4 to 5.
Also named in the Americas Cup squad are Jamaican sprinter Powell, US sprinter Dix and US hurdler Oliver, who all won medals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Smith jumped his way into the history books when he set a new national record with his leap of 8.22m at the CAC Games.
Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson, said it was a fantastic achievement for Smith to be named in a team made up of the best athletes from the region.
"This is so awesome especially when you look at the list of athletes who have been selected for the team," she said.
"This is the top of the crop of athletes in our region. Tyrone is now on his way to Europe to compete in three meets before he heads off to the Continental Cup.
"What a way for the BTFA to end such a great track season."
