WOMENS BASKETBALL

Somerset Hornets 37

Warwick Suns 24

Guard Dee Smith led from the front as her Somerset Hornets blazed a trail past the Warwick Suns on Sunday, winning 37-24 in Bermuda Women's Basketball League action.

As both teams struggled from the floor, it was Smith who found her shooting touch, sinking two back-to-back three-pointers to start a 6-0 run for the Hornets.

The inability to capitalise on easy opportunities at the basket resulted in Suns falling behind by 10 points in the early minutes as the team missed five consecutive lay-ups. Nothing seemed to go right for the Suns as they were held to league record low at half-time of just four points.

In the second half, Suns were given a glimpse of hope as Tashae Thompson found her offensive game taking on several Hornets players and scoring three consecutive lay-ups. Hornets, however, would answer with a run of their own, scoring the next eight points.

Despite the Suns much improved second half, fatigue started to kick in on the five-woman squad and Hornets would close the game with a 10-4 run.

St. George's Storm 48

Hamilton Parish Hurricanes 37

The return of national team player Jamila Godwin wasn't enough to lift the Hurricanes over the Storm as they went down by 11 points.

Parish came out attacking the interior defence of St. George's as the two teams traded baskets in the first 10 minutes of play. Led by guard Jahtuere Trott, the Storm would go on an 8-0 run to push their lead to 22-16.

The athletic play of Danielle Watson would lead to two consecutive Storm turnovers which resulted in the Hurricanes pulling within two late in the first half.

Two costly turnovers in the final minute of the half saw the Storm push their lead to six points at the break.

In the second, St. George's' quick hitting offence scored early with Trott hitting from both sides of the wings to push the Storms lead to 12 points. Parish would pull within two with four minutes remaining as a turnover by the Storm led to an uncontested lay-up for Watson.

Shane Scott blocked and contested any and every shot that came her way, three of her five blocks coming in the final minutes of play.

Storm would finish on a 10-4 run to clinch the win.
