Smith ready for World Champs

Bermuda long jumper Tyrone Smith has touched down in Germany ahead of this weekend's IAAF World Championships, writes Stephen Wright.

Smith is the only Bermuda athlete at the Championships, held in Berlin, having been awarded a wild card from the Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA).

Fellow long jumper Aranxta King would have also received a wild card from the BTFA but she is unable to compete because of university commitments.

Donna Watson, president of the BTFA, said there were no other female athletes close to the World Championships standard.

Smith, who travelled to Berlin on Sunday with Watson and coach Gerry Swan, was unable to meet the 8.05 metre qualifying standard. But he warmed up for the event by finishing second at a Grand Prix in Bogota, Colombia, posting a leap of 7.96 metres in windy conditions.

The Worlds take place on nine consecutive days from Saturday, August 15 to Sunday, August 23.
