Smith, Rego and Keyes crowned Caribbean champs
Bermuda tennis trio Tyler Smith, Christopher Rego and Clementine Keyes have returned to the Island as champions of the under-13 Caribbean Championships for the first time.
Smith, who has had a summer to remember on the court, also won the under-13 girl's singles title at the event held in Trinidad.
She defeated defending champion Chassidy King of Antigua and Barbuda for the second time this month in the semi-final, having already beaten her with minimal fuss at the Coca Cola ITF junior international tournament in St. Lucia.
The second ranked player in the tournament then ran Melena Lopez off the court in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, to lay claim to her third title of the summer.
Smith is ranked fourth in the under-14 Caribbean category, while she was also ranked number one in Central America & Caribbean Tennis Confederation girl's under-12.
Christopher Rego also produced a good performance against Joel Lutchman of Surinam in the boy's final, although he went down in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.
Rego had advanced to the finals after he defeated Ty Abraham 6-3, 6-2.
Rain at the weekend dampened things at the tournament as the Bermudians were gearing up for more success.
Keyes did not take to the court in her match against Joelle Hall in the consolation final, while Smith and Keyes girl's doubles final battle against Rayven Barry of Bahamas and Lotte Van Reek of Aruba was not played either.
Despite not being able to play their two finals, the squad finished their campaign on 29 points, two points ahead of Trinidad and Tobago.
Surinam (24), Antigua & Barbuda (19), Barbados (16) round out the top five.
President of Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association (BLTA) David Lambert described Bermuda's win as a tremendous achievement.
"I would like to congratulate the team manager Brent Smith and the players for their tournament victory.
"Bermuda had never previously won this competition.
"This illustrates that our development programme is working well."
Earlier this year Bermuda's Davis Cup team gained promotion to Group III of the Americas Region.
