Smith shows class
With Bermuda's biggest road race, the May 24 Marathon Derby just weeks away, multiple winner Kavin Smith showed, at over 40, he's still in the kind of shape that could yet earn him another crown.
Smith broke the finishing tape first in the annual RMS 20 Kilometre event, clocking a respectable one hour, 16 minutes and 51 seconds as he was chased home by Simon Ashby who finished just five seconds later in 1:16:56.
Top triathlete Riaan Naude also showed he could be a threat in the upcoming Derby – about to celebrate its 100th anniversary – as he placed third in 1:17:03.
Notably absent from the fiield, however, was defending Marathon Derby champion Chris Estwanik who is being touted as an overwhelming favourite to retain his title over the trek from Somerset to Hamilton. With Estwanik's wife, Ashley, unable to defend her title as she awaits the birth of her first baby, Victoria Fiddick looks the female to beat in the Derby.
She romped home yesterday in eighth place overall in 1:24:18, with second-placed Alison Harvey clocking 1:34:02 (16th overall). Third female was Lesley Caslin in 1:34:45.
One hundred and forty one runners completed the course.
In a 10K race run in conjunction with the main event, another hot Marathon Derby contender Lamont Marshall stormed to victory in an impressive 32 minutes and seven seconds, one of the fastest 10K times clocked by a Bermudian on local roads.
Evan Naude placed second in 35:31 and Calvert Lee third in 36:55.
Top female was Jennifer Alen in 42:16 with Melissa Thompson taking second in 44:22 and Andrea Banks third in 45:31.
This year's Marathon Derby will actually be run on Monday, May 25 with the May 24 public holiday falling on a Sunday.
