Smith takes ITF title

Bermudian Tyler Smith led from the front at the ITF Junior tennis tournament as she won the 14 and under Girls championship held at the WER Joell Stadium, outduelling compatriot Christina Joynes on Saturday winning 6-1, 6-1.

Smith had minimal fuss with Joynes as she swept aside her opponent in quick time.

Bermuda's other finalist at the weekend, Stefan Cooper, who teamed up with Alexander Gitin of Russia for the 14 and under boys' final, lost 6-2, 6-1, to the team of Penfield Binet of Canada and Ryan Simons of Jamaica.

Number one seed Binet from Canada also won the 14 and under Boys Singles title after his straight sets win over the fourth seeded Gitin 6-3, 6-1.

Nick Chappell of the United States won the 18 and under Boys Singles title seeing off a spirited challenge from compatriot Morgan Mays, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

The Girls 18 and under final went the distance as number one seed Monica Yajima of the US squeezed by Fausthyara Pietersz of the Netherlands Antilles 6-4, 4-6-6-4.

Rodney Carey from Bahamas and his partner Darian King from Barbados, number one in the 18 and under Boys doubles, won the title after their Canadian opponents, Jean Michel Blouin and Benoit Paradis had to retire.

The score was 6-3, 1-1 when the match was ended.
