Social Club seek maiden title
Young Men's Social Club will resume their quest for a maiden Belco Cup when they meet Cleveland County in the competition's semi-finals today at Lords.
In recent years the Pembroke club have held a vice-like grip on the Central Counties and Bermuda Cricket Board's limited overs competitions but have yet to stamp their authority in the Belco Cup, contested annually between the top four teams in the Premier Division from the pevious campaign.
The closest they have come to Belco Cup glory was two years ago when they lost to cup holders Southampton Rangers in the final by 68 runs.
They also lost to Rangers in last year's semi-final after being restricted to 196.
Social Club are unbeaten in their only two matches so far this season, having brushed aside Central Counties rivals Police and Western Stars last weekend to secure their place in the Open League semi-finals.
Even without suspended skipper Kevin Hurdle, the Premier Division champions have not skipped a beat and have already proven they intend to challenge for top honours again this campaign.
Hurdle has one match remaining in a domestic three-game ban and should Social Club get past Cleveland today will be eligible to play in tomorrow's final.
His inclusion could bolster an attack that has been led so far by the unlikeliest of sources in part-time seamer, Nakia Smith, who claimed career-best figures of six for 12 against Police and 24 hours later snared four for 34 against his former team Stars.
Social Club have also unearthed a potential gem in youngster David Lovell jr who thumped 94 against Police and followed that superb knock up with 69 against Stars the next day.
Cleveland, meanwhile, are making their first appearance in the Belco Cup under new skipper Tamauri Tucker and new coach Allan Douglas.
Today's remaining Belco Cup semi-final sees four-time defending champions Rangers taking on Police at Somerset Cricket Club while PHC tackle St.David's at White Hill Field in an Group A make-up match to decide which of the two joins Social Club, Devonshire and St.George's in the semi-finals of the revised Open League.
n Bermuda's national women's cricket team travel to Forida this weekend where they will begin a bid to qualify for the next Women's World Cup.
The squad, who made headlines for all the wrong reasons after being skittled out for a humiliating 13 against tournament hosts South Africa during the previous Women's World Cup qualifying campaign, will take part in the Americas Championships also involving USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina and Trinidad and Tobago.
Bermuda are led by Terrilyn Paynter and will take on Argentina in their opening match on Monday in Fort Lauderdale.
The Americas Championships format will see each team play the other in a 20-20 over affair, with the eventual top three facing off in a triangular series (40-over matches).
The top two sides at the end of that series will advance to next year's play-off that will determine which Americas representative will participate in Women's World Cup qualifiers.
England are the current women's world champions.
Bermuda: Terrilyn Paynter (capt), Stacey Babb, Precious Smith, Charlene Thompson, Wendy Woodley, Maryellen Jackson, Nicole Jones, Rachael Smith, Rhoda Jones, Akeyla Furbert, Jenay Edness, Rickelle Smith, Zeita Bean, Lisa Richardson, Carol Edness. Coach: Arnold Manders.
