Somerset's day of reckoning

Somerset skipper Jacobi Robinson has called upon his side to stand up and be counted tomorrow when they fight for their Premier Division lives against Southampton Rangers at Somerset Cricket Club.

A win would keep the West End club in the top flight while a loss coupled with a Young Men's Social Club win would mean a return to the First Division.

Somerset managed to avoid the drop last year after claiming a victory against tomorrow's opponents, albeit by default.

This year, however, Somerset will have to do things the hard way against a side still harbouring hopes of snatching the title from under St. David's nose, and Robinson, who will miss out on the titanic clash with a back injury, is adamant his side will produce the goods to stay up.

"I don't try to think about the negative part of the match and the consequences of a loss. I only want the guys to go out and perform to their ability," said Robinson.

"The mentality should be that we are staying up. I believe we have the ability to beat Rangers, we have before so I don't see any reason why we can't beat them come Sunday.

"I'm out with a back injury so I won't take part in the game but I have the confidence in the side that they can pull out the victory".

Somerset have had a roller coaster season, having won their first two games before a series of losses and rained out matches put a dent in their hopes of collecting any silverware.

Now they find themselves in a fight for their top flight status with only themselves to blame.

The skipper acknowledged that senseless batting and lack of application when needed was the reason that the side have struggled.

The team do have a game in hand which is expected to swing in their favour after their match with Police was called off. But those points have not been officially awarded by Bermuda Cricket Board..

Experience will be on their side after narrowly surviving the drop last year at the expense of Cup Match rivals St. George's. Noting the importance of staying in the top flight, Robinson backed his side to step up their game and win the match.

"It is important for us to stay up for the betterment of our younger players. We have a lot of youngsters in our ranks and we have to make sure that they are playing at the highest level possible, getting the proper training and coming up against quality opposition.

"The difference between this year and last year has been application. We are not applying ourselves when we go to the wicket, our problem has been our batting. We have had a hard year and I hope this is a one-off year for us, so hopefully we come back next year stronger and better prepared to take on those in the top flight.

"We won't look at the points against Police if they come our way, we don't even want them to be an issue. Our concern is to win to solidify our position in the league.

"It doesn't matter of those points, the point is if we win we stay up and that is our concern right now."
