Stan leads team for Opti Champs

Sam Stan will lead the 10 sailors from Bermuda who will compete at the North American Optimist Championships this summer.

Bermuda's team to compete at this summer's North American Optimist Championships was decided over the weekend after trials involving 17 sailors vying for the 10 available spots.

Leading Bermuda's team will be Sam Stan, who is the reigning national champion and he also continued to dominate the competition on the weekend winning 13 of the 17 races overall

The two-part trials were sailed over separate weekends.

Representing Bermuda along with Stan at the championships, which will be sailed in Kingston, Ontario from June 26 to July 4, will be Antonio Bailey, Makai Joel, Ellie Wollmann, Michael Barit, Cecilia Wollmann, Ferdinand Arnold, Hannah Horsfield, Rory Caslin and Mikey Wollmann.

Last weekend saw the second and final part of the trials.

Even though the winds were over 20 knots on Saturday, the nine to 15 year-olds competed in the Great Sound. Four races were completed in challenging conditions, but the fifth race had to be abandoned when a squall came through with winds gusting to 35 knots.

Racing on Sunday was conducted in much milder conditions, with winds starting out at 15 to 20 knots and gradually diminishing to 10 to 15 knots. Six races were completed on Sunday. The first part of the qualifiers had been sailed in November at the Bermuda National Optimist Championships, a two-day event that was also marked by extreme weather on the first day.
