Swim duo break more records

Following on the success at the recent Carifta Swimming Championships in Aruba, Bermuda's swimmers are continuing to re-write the record book.

Overseas swimmers Kiera Aitken, Bermuda's two time Olympian, and Jason Mastalir, recent Carifta participant, both set multiple records at their regional championship meets.

Aitken set new Bermuda Open Women's Short Course records while competing in the XVII Copa De Espana Short Course Championships in Castelon, Spain. She set records in the 50m Freestyle and the 100m Freestyle.

Swimming the lead-off leg in her Barcelona Club's 4 x 50 Freestyle relay, Aitken lowered the record from 26.30 to 26.11 and led her team to a second place finish.

In the 100m Individual Freestyle, Aitken dropped the mark from 56.89 to 56.08 to finish 3rd overall.

Over the past weekend, Jason Mastalir competed for his Quebec swim club swimming in the Open Age Group category at regional team championships in Quebec City where he set three Bermuda 17-18 Age Group records and one Bermuda Open men's record.

After smashing the time 1500m long course record in Aruba, Mastalir continued his attack on the 1500m swim, this time over short course. He lowered the Bermuda Open men's record by more than 40 seconds from 16:52.28 to 16:11.28. This is also a 17 -18 Boys record. He finished fourth behind Canada's top two open water swimmers.

Mastalir also swam a 17-18 Boys Short Course record in the 200 IM during the pre-lims. His time of 2:12.11 surpassed the previous record held for the last 14 years by Stephen Fahy. The finals were competed over Long Course and he lowered the 17-18 Boys 200IM record by almost four seconds to 2:16.16.

As the build up continues towards the Championship season, which includes the Best of the BEST Series, Makin' Wave Summer Age Group Championships and the Rego-Sotheby National Championships more records are expected to fall. The next local meet is the final meet in the Best of the BEST series, Saturday May 9th , 9am at the BASA Pool.
