Swimmers head for the Sound

A number of swim events will take place over the next two weeks – including two of the most popular in Harrington Sound.

The first of the open water swims – the Trunk Island Swim – will be held this Sunday, starting at 12.00 noon.

Organised by the Sharks club, it requires swimmers to make the 1,325 metre crossing from Trunk Island in the Sound to the dock of the former Palmetto Hotel.

Entries close today at 5.00 p.m. Swimmers can register at Makin Waves on Front Street or online at www.racedayworld.com.

The following weekend the Round the Sound event marks its 20th year with some 130 swimmers from overseas flying in to help celebrate the anniversary.

Those taking part have the option of competing over five distances – 800 metres, 2K, 4K, 7.25K and 10K – all of them contributing to charity.

The staggered start will see the 10K swimmers setting off at 10.00 a.m., 7.25K at 10.45; 4K at 11.45; 2K at 12. p.m.; 800 metres at 12.45 p.m.

Over the years more than $200,000 has been raised for local charities, this year's beneficiary being the Sloop Foundation.

Registration can also be made online at www.racedayworld.com or at www.roundthesound.bm.

Meanwhile, Sharks club will hold their Sprint Meet at the BASA pool tomorrow, featuring a parent to parent relay.

A points trophy will be awarded to the most successful club.
