Swimmers impress at Junior Nationals

A host of records were broken over the weekend during the Sportseller Junior National Championships – a meet designed exclusively for those swimmers 12 years and younger.

The championships, at the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association's pool, saw Mitchell Gariepy from the Sharks club continue his assault on the nine and 10 year age group records as he trimmed two tenths of a second off of the 50 metres butterfly record of Andrew Taft.

That record had stood for a remarkable 23 years.

The remaining four records set at the meet came in the relay events.

Susanna Armano swam an 'A' time in the 50 metres breaststroke and Somer Froud and Jesse Washington were also strong throughout the entire meet.

Commenting on the Sharks' performance, Rob DeSilva said: "This was a very successful meet for our young Sharks who attained 71 personal bests (PBs) with a number achieving three PBs each – Susanna Armano, Holly Bruton, Abigail Faries, Mitchell Gariepy, Jada Outerbridge, Kion Richardson, Hazel Roberts, D'Andra Seymour, Brynn Telenko, Jesse Washington and Nina Wehmeyer."

Ben Smith, the Aquatics Manager and national coach said: "There was an excellent turnout of swimmers from all three local swimming clubs and many outstanding swims were performed by them. The day ended with the team relays which are always very exciting. The swimmers enthusiastically cheered on their team-mates and it was great to see so many young kids competing. It definitely bodes well for Bermuda swimming."

For the Harbour club, it was their dynamic quartet of Ashley Irby, Emma Harvey, Lea Grandisson and Anna Wilcox who established new records in both the 4 x 25 medley and 4 x 25 freestyle relays in the eight and under age group.

They also swept the age group individually.

In the 11 and 12 year girls division, Vanessa Esposito posted some fine swims as she challenged the eventual winner, Somer Froud, head to head taking first place in the 50 metres butterfly, a second in the 100 metres freestyle and a third in the 50 metres freestyle, all with significant drops from her previous best times.

Barry Hanson of the Dolphins club said: "The relays were competitive and wildly supported especially the boys' 9-10 200 IM relay team of Evan Farrow, Brittan Moseley, Josh Irvine and Padraic O'Shaughnessy who set an age group record with a time of 3:14.23.

"Special mention should be given to Jude Mosley, Tate Croft and Dennis Pasagic but it should be said that all of our swimmers performed well with 58 personal bests."
