Swimmers shine in Canada
Swimmers from Harbour Amateur Swim Club returned home this week full of confidence after competing in the The Greater Ottawa Kingfish Invitational swim meet in Ottawa, Canada.
The athletes were rewarded with a laden of ribbons with most of the team racing in a 50 metre pool for the first time.
The meet attracted 436 swimmers, representing 17 clubs within the eastern region of Ontario.
It featured two separate daily sessions, split by age group, with juniors (12 and under) and senior categories (13 and over).
In the juniors, 10-year-old Charlie Pilgrim had an excellent meet, placing in all six of his events.
The youngster won the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke, scored second places in the 100m and 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley, while rounding out his efforts with a fourth place finish in the 50m backstroke.
Vanessa Esposito, 10, also placed in all six of her events.
She had second places in 50m butterfly and 200m freestyle, a fourth place in the 50m freestyle, a fifth place in the 100m freestyle, a sixth place in the 200m individual medley and a seventh place finish in the 100m breaststroke.
She also set new Bermuda age group records in the last two events.
Riley Voth, 12, placed in five of his events, finishing second in the 200m breaststroke, a pair of third place finishes in the 50m breaststroke, backstroke, a fourth in the 50m butterfly and a seventh place finish in the 100m breaststroke.
Rounding out the junior category was 12-year-old Megan Nagel who placed in four of her events – the 50m, 100 and 200m freestyles and the 200m breaststroke.
In the senior category, it was 14-year-old Dejan Wellman who led the Harbour effort, again placing in all six of his events.
He had first place finishes in the 50m and 200m, freestyle, a second place in the 100m breaststroke, third places in the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle and a fifth place in the 200m individual medley.
Molly Pilgrim, 13, also managed to place in all six of her events.
She had a third place in the 200 metre backstroke, fourth place finishes in the 100m backstroke and the 200m freestyle, a fifth in the 100m breaststroke and a pair of eighth place finishes in 50m butterfly and 200m individual medley.
Other senior swimmers earning ribbons were Rachael Voth, with a seventh place finish in the 50m breaststroke and Annabella Doyle with eighth place in the 50m backstroke.
