Talented teen claims another tennis double
Tyler Smith continued her ascendancy to the junior Caribbean tennis heirarchy at the Coca Cola ITF junior international tournament on Sunday in St. Lucia where she completed a memorable double in the 14 and under division, winning both the singles and doubles titles.
Smith also excelled at the recently completed ITF tournament held at the WER Joell Stadium in Bermuda where she also won the 14 and under girls' singles title as well as the doubles.
Losing a total of just six games during her run towards claiming the singles crown in St. Lucia, the Bermudian overpowered most of her teenage rivals.
First up was Samiya Dottin of Barbados who Smith swept aside 6-3, 6-0 to move into the semi finals where she crushed the host country's Stephanie Devauz-Lovell 6-0, 6-0.
It was much the same in the final where Smith came up against Antigua's Chassidy King, who again proved no match.
The Bermudian wasted little time lifting the title with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
In the doubles, Smith teamed up with her first round singles opponent, Dottin, and they combined to beat Paige Veira and D'Jerid'Jeri Raymond 6-1,6-0.
They were, however, stretched in the next round by King and Jessica Isaac who put up a fight in the first set before going down 6-7 after a tiebreak.
The second set was more straightforward, Smith and Dottin winning 6-3.
Smith then claimed her second championship as she and Dottin overwhelmed Maria Sofia Martinez-Santori and Melena Lopez 6-4, 6-0.
