Teachers lift another league title
Teachers wrapped up their second league title in a row with an impressive 26-15 win over Police at the National Sports Centre over the weekend.
Shauntino Simons bagged two tries, Alex Males added another and Greg Fraser kicked 11 points as the defending champions triumphed in the top-of-the-table clash.
Police, meanwhile, grabbed two scores through David Pringle, but will point to the harsh sin-binning of Paul Davis and an overturned penalty as moments when the game got away from them.
Knowing that a win would guarantee them back-to-back titles, Teachers were fired up from the start and they went ahead through a Greg Fraser penalty after Police had been caught offside.
Males' try put them further ahead and once Fraser converted Simons' first try, Teachers opened up a sizeable lead.
For their part Police managed a Tommy Edwards penalty but the loss of Davis and an overturned penalty in front of their own posts, which Fraser kicked, brought an upbrut end to any thoughts of a comeback.
Pringle's first try moments after the break briefly raised Police hopes but once Simons had scored for a second time the game was all but over, and following Pringle's second score, Teachers ran out deserved winners.
In the first men's game, Renegades beat Mariners 12-5 with all the points coming in an action-packed first half that saw the men in green struggle to recover from the early loss of wing Kory Logan with a fracture to his lower leg.
Greg Garside and Tom Healy scored for Renegades with Soniko Thomas getting a try for Mariners.
Renegades women, meanwhile, continued their complete domination of the game, winning their third title in a row and extending their unbeaten run to as many years.
It wasn't all plain sailing for the black and whites, however, and a 0-0 draw with Mariners saw them lose their perfect record. In the day's other game, tries from Saphia Tonkin, Kate Brown and Tammy Hall saw Police beat Teachers 3-0.
