Teens aiming to make splash at Games
A team of Bermudian teenagers will be looking to make a splash when they compete in the NatWest Island Games later this month.
Swimmers Rebecca Heyliger, Morgan Hopkins, Ashley Yearwood, Nicole Yearwood, and Nathan Frick will be flying the Island's flag in Aland, and will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Olympians Ashley Aitken and Roy Allen Burch.
It was Kiera's sister, Ashley, who starred for Bermuda at the last Island Games in Rhodes, Greece, two years ago when she scooped bronze medals in the 50 metres freestyle and breaststroke.
Team manager Vivian Yearwood and national coach Richard Goodwin will accompany the team to the Baltic Sea island.
The four female members of the team have already put in fine performances this year at the Carifta Championships in Aruba. Ashley Yearwood struck gold in the 50 metres butterfly while her sister Nicole claimed bronze in the 100m backstroke.
Hopkins snatched gold in the 200m backstroke with relative ease after opening a seven second gap, and Heyliger was part of the relay side that placed fifth.
Goodwin is confident the youngsters can produce the goods in Aland and said the Games would offer a great experience in terms of their development.
"This is a comparatively young team as the Bermuda Amateur Swimming Association (BASA) consider the Island Games as a developmental meet," said Goodwin.
"It gives the team members the opportunity to be involved in a regional competition and to get the necessary exposure prior to competing in senior international games and championships.
"But this is a very seasoned group of swimmers with the girls having all competed and won medals at the Carifta swimming championships over the past few years.
"They also have the opportunity to swim a relay on each day of the Island Games and this is an event that they are eagerly looking forward to."
The swimming centre, Alands Idrottscenter, was opened in November, 2004 and the 25m pool was specially designed for competitions and training.
There is permanent seating for 350 spectators with the centre also doubling as the host of the table tennis competition.
The swimming meet at the Games will be held over four consecutive days, from June 29 through to July 2.
