Tired Zebras forced to play again after fixture pile-up

PHC coach Kyle Lightbourne has called on his side to focus on what lies ahead as they play their second game in four days tomorrow night when they host St. David's in a Premier Division game at Somerset Cricket Club.

Zebras took 120 minutes and a penalty shoot-out to knock out Dandy Town in the Friendship Trophy on Tuesday night, and while the victory sees the side into the next round of another cup competition, Lighbourne admitted that the pile up of fixtures might prove a problem in his team's preparation for the upcoming game.

"We may have a few tired legs heading into the game. Obviously playing games so close together can cause players to be short of their normal fitness level, especially after playing 120 minutes as we did and under the circumstances," said Lightbourne.

"Town could have had a few more goals than what they scored and we came into the match in the second half as we looked to go for the winner before Khamisi got sent off.

"We would have been a little bit worse if we would have played on Sunday, but that game was postponed and we can look towards St. David's.

"Obviously we would have liked to have played against Somerset Eagles but that could end up as a blessing to have that game in hand in our back pocket for the long haul."

The focus now shifts to St. David's and the Zebras boss doesn't want his side to take their opponents lightly given their recent stumbles in the league.

One thing that may make the game a little more evenly balances is the fact that Khamisi Lightbourne was sent off in the Friendship clash with Hornets and will miss the game.

While acknowledging the impact the youngsters have had on the side, with Idrees Sharieff also making a good impression, Lightbourne also noted that there are a few players ready to make their way into the first team as well as some injured players returning to the side.

"We can't concern ourselves with what happened against Town because our next game is against an opponent that lost their last game quite handily on the road. They were in the match at 1-1 at the half but let in seven and we must not let them to gain any momentum in the match that may suggest that they can get something in the game.

"Our players play for each another and in the sense of both Idrees and Khamisi, they are both young and talented and show no fear.

"When you have young players that are confident in their ability and can run at defenders it opens up a new avenue for you and although he did get sent off, it allows someone else come into the side and prove they deserve to be out there. We still have some players to come back into the side so we are getting stronger and results are coming."

Tomorrow's game kicks off at Somerset at 8.00 p.m.
