Title race gathering momentum

Everyone seems to be beating each other at the moment in the Premier Division and the title race is starting to heat up just a little bit.

It was a huge win for Devonshire Cougars over Boulevard at the weekend especially considering they had lost heavily to PHC in their previous match.

Thankfully, North Village were able to get three points against Somerset Trojans last Friday night and that's just about kept us in the hunt. If we'd lost, things may have started to become difficult for us.

It was a hard fought win and although we were winning 2-0 for a while, Trojans were never really out of the game. When they pulled a goal back we started to get a little edgy and it was probably an entertaining game for the neutrals.

Our midfielder Sammy DeGraff has been on fire for us this season and scored both of our goals against Trojans. I gather he is the Premier Division's top goalscorer, scoring nine goals in all competitions already this campaign.

I'd have taken Sammy scoring nine goals all season let alone at this relatively early stage. He's scored some vital goals for us and he's done really well – long may it continue.

It's getting to that point in the season when you can't afford to let points pass you by if you have title ambitions and I think things are going to get really interesting in the build-up to Christmas.

I still think the team that can finish higher than Boulevard will be the side that ends up winning the league title. Blazers have had a lot of distractions of late concerning where they are going to play their home matches, and that may have played a part in their defeat to Cougars.

But you can't rule out PHC, either. They're a very experienced, winning team and they're still very much in the title race.

I was pleased to see Andrew Bascome appointed on a part-time basis by the Bermuda Football Association's (BFA) national academy last week.

Andrew has had to wait for a long time to get involved in the national programme and I believe he will prove a great capture for the BFA. I gather he will be coaching the Under-15s and Under-16s and I think there are a lot of good things to come from those teams now.

At the moment his Boulevard team are at the top of the Premier Division and his Robin Hood side are top of the First Division. I think I might try and get him a coaching stint at Village if I can!

He really knows his football and both his teams are having a great season.

Robin Hood manager, Paul Scope, has attended the United Soccer Leagues (USL) AGM in Florida this week in his capacity as Bermuda Hogges secretary.

Paul has gone to the AGM along with BFA officials, technical director Derek Broadley and general secretary David Sabir, as they look to strengthen their ties with the USL.

The main part of going to the AGM is to sort out your fixtures for the coming season and myself and Kyle Lightbourne will be getting some feedback from Paul as soon as he gets back from the meetings.
