Title triumph proves Simons is on the up

Life in the fast lane: 2008 WERA Superbike and Superstock 600cc Novice champion and Bermuda's own Jevaughn Simons in action in Florida last weekend.

Bermudian motorcycle racer Jevaughn (Squirrel) Simons added the Michelin/WERA National Challenge Series Superstock title to his Superbike crown at the Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama last week where the 24-year-old 600cc Novice took the chequered red flag for the sixth time this year competing abroad in the US.

The Smith's Parish resident who races out of Alabama for team owner Aaron Brown – a past fabricator of late Nascar legend Dale Earnhardt – continued his meteroic ascent on the Michelin/WERA circuit by wrapping up a second Novice championship during his debut season racing at this level.

"I'm still waiting for reality to sink in and to be honest winning my first championship hasn't sunk in yet.

"But it is great to be able to say that I am now the number one ranked novice in the United States.

"I can walk around with these two titles which confirm that I am a good rider who is moving up," Simons told The Royal Gazette.

Simons burst onto the 600cc Novice earlier this year and since then has surpassed even his own expectations.

"I thought it would be hard at first and as I progressed I did find things challenging.

"But in the end I put the skills and the talent I have to good use and that's what brought me through," he added.

"This year has actually been a massive eye opener for me as to how everything operates out here (in US).

"It's no nonense and it's either you do what is required of you or you simply don't ride.

"It's very organised and I like competing abroad because you get to see different tracks while your mind gets open to different playing fields. The skill level of the riders is just immensely different."

With two titles under his belt Simons has already set his sights on next year when he will form part of a Bermudian threesome along with compatriots Shannon Caisey and Antoine Richards at AB-1 Motorsports.

The trio plan to race in WERA National 600cc Expert, Superstock and Superbike and Select Moto ST Endurance events across the United States next year.

Simons is also currently negotiating terms of a deal with manager Craig Robinson who manages AMA Superstock Championship team Jordan Suzuki which is owned by NBA legend Micheal Jordan.

Robinson also managed late Bermudian motorcycle racer Toriano Wilson who died from injuries sustained in a crash at Virginia International Raceway in a Red Bull AMA US Rookies Cup event last month.

Simons, whose immediate plans include competing in various winner-takes-all events in the US towards the end of the year, has dedicated his watershed season on the Michelin/WERA circuit to the memory of late mentor and close friend Kyle Pimental who died last year following a bout with cancer.

"He (Kyle) is the one who got me started in racing. I always wanted to be just like him because to me his riding style and technique was ideal," Simons explained.

"Kyle was a role model to me and so I'd like to dedicate my two championships to him. I am racing today for him."
