Top athletes set for busy summer
Bermuda's athletes are gearing up for a busy summer with a number of international events on the calendar in coming weeks.
Bermuda Track and Field Association are sending a team to the CAC Age Group Championships in Nassau, Bahamas from June 18 to June 25, and a separate team are heading off to the Island Games in Aland in the Baltic Sea from June 27 to July 4.
Before those events, BTFA president Donna Watson will be taking six athletes to the Atlanta Dekalb International Prep Classic this weekend, to be held at the Georgia Tech University's George C. Griffin track, a venue known for fast times.
Many of those competing will be looking to qualify for the World Youth Championships and Pan Am Junior Championships later this year.
Those athletes heading to the Bahamas next month have qualified by earning points during recent BTFA meets at the National Sports Centre. Competitors finishing first and second in the points standings over combined events were selected.
The CAC Championships will see the 11-12 boys and girls teams competing in five events and the 13-14 boys and girls taking part in seven events.
"These athletes have been training hard with the assistance from specialist coaches," said Watson. "I feel that Bermuda will do very well in this event and based on some of the results from the other islands, we are looking pretty good.
"Each country can send a maximum of two athletes per age group. There will also be a mixed 4x100 metres relay in each age group in which Bermuda will participate."
Full team:
11-12 girls – Jordan Bascome, Aaliyah Nolan
11-12 boys – David Jones, Jahmari Sutton
13-14 girls – Maliha Weeks
13-14 boys – Dale Eve and Bruce DeGrilla
Head coach – Cal Simons; Jarita Dill Team manager.
Meanwhile, in addition to the six competing at Georgia Tech this weekend, Bermuda's Henry Stevens-Carty will also take part, although he's not travelling with the squad.
"I am looking forward to some good performances from these athletes," added Watson. "Based on the entry list there should be some good competition for these athletes as they have posted some very competitive times."
Team:
Ashley Berry (3000 metres, 1500m); Darico Clarke (800m), Shawnae Brangman (100m, long jump), Ravoshia Whaley (400m), Ryan Furbert (400m, high jump) and Kyle Virgil (100m, 400m).
A more senior team has been assembled for the Island Games, including this week's Marathon Derby winner Victoria Fiddick and female runner-up Jennifer Alen.
The 12-athlete squad also includes Daniel Tucker, Xavier James, Jeneko Lottimore, Anton Velleman, Stephane Schoeman, Melissa Clarke, Stephen Allen, Ashley Robinson, George Smith and Shianne Smith.
Accompanying the team will be coach Tony Bean and therapist Susan Verity.
Shianne Smith recently placed sixth in the heptathlon with a personal best of 5,079 points in the NCAA Division II Championships in San Angelo, Texas while representing California State University.
As well as the Island Games, Smith has also been named for the Bermuda squad to travel to Trinidad for the inaugural Caribbean Games in July.
CSU athletics coach said of the Bermudian: "Smith surpassed her qualifying mark. She finished sixth with 5,079 points, which was better than the 4,868 points she had while finishing third in the CCAA Championships.
"She was sixth after the opening day and held her position after strong efforts in the long jump, javelin and 800 metres."
