Track and field athletes shine at US meets
Athletes Tre Houston and Kijuan Wilkinson have continued the fine form of Bermudians in track and field this year with both putting in superb performances over the weekend.
Houston represented Howard Community College at the NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Alfred State College in New York.
After running the fastest times during the preliminary and semi-final rounds, the Bermudian won the 100 metres in a time of 10.64 seconds running into a headwind.
Experiencing similar wind conditions during the final of the 200 metres, Houston again emerged champion as he crossed the finish line first in a time of 21.24 seconds, becoming the double sprint champion.
The Howard student, who ran very impressively in the 200 at the recent CARIFTA Games with his fastest and best time to date (21.30), lowered his personal best again.
Wilkinson, meanwhile, put his best foot forward at the Atlantic-10 (A-10) Conference Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Representing Temple University, he earned second place against the Conference's best triple jumpers with a new personal best of 14.52 metres.
His performance also qualified him for the IC4A Championships that will be held from May 15 to 17 at Princeton University.
Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson said she was pleased with the performances of the two Bermudians, nothing that the athletes were building on their Carifta success and still have meets throughout the summer for which they are aiming to qualify.
"I believe I have stated this before, I think we are just building on the momentum and success of Carifta," said Watson.
"We still have several events during the summer that athletes are trying to qualify for.
"Many have already met the standards and are maintaining their fitness in preparation for these events.
"Kijuan has been competing at Carifta for several years and is not new on the scene. He is too old for Carifta and is trying to qualify for our summer events."
