Trojans on verge of cup history
Somerset Trojans are on the threshold of making history – again!
A victory over St.George's Colts at Somerset Cricket Club next Tuesday night will see Trojans become the first club to win both the Premier and First Division Dudley Eve titles in the festive competition's current format.
Trojans rolled over Devonshire Cougars 3-0 to triumphantly raise a third overall Dudley Eve title in 2006-07 – some 13 years after beating PHC Zebras 3-1 on aggregate to win their first in the old format which featured a two-leg final.
That famous win also saw the West End club avenge a 1982 Dudley Eve final loss to Zebras by the flip of a coin after the two sides had remained deadlocked at four goals apiece after 240 minutes of rivetting football.
Trojans' influential skipper Jelani Scott scored a memorable goal during his team's 2006-07 Dudley Eve triumph over Cougars and if all goes according to script next week he hopes to play another integral role in returning some of the lost sparkle to 'Silver City'.
"Being the first club to win Dudley Eve titles in the Premier and First Divisions hasn't really been our motivation as we are basically in a rebuilding stage right now and seem to be making good progress," Scott told The Royal Gazette.
Trojans' 2008-09 Dudley Eve campaign got off to a shaky start when a late Detroy Smith header gave St.George's a 1-0 victory over the West Enders at Somerset Cricket Club on December 17.
However, Scott and his supporting cast bounced back with an emphatic 3-0 demolition of St.David's and then squeezed by neighbours Somerset Eagles 1-0 at Lords on New Year's Day to set up a rematch with First Division leaders St.George's who have only conceded one goal in their two Dudley Eve matches so far.
"Even though we lost to St.George's in our opening Dudley Eve match we were still confident because it wasn't as though we were outplayed or dominated," added Scott.
"I felt we had the majority of possession and created more opportunities. We just lost our focus in the final minutes of the game and they snuck in a goal.
"But that loss wasn't disheartening to the extent that we were dominated and they were the better team. And I feel we now have a good chance of turning the tables on St.George's because we have improved as the tournament has progressed and now we are just looking to finish things off with victory in the final."
Scott also hopes Trojans' current good run of form will spill over into their league campaign which sees them just four points adrift of the second promotion spot. Somerset's match against cellar dwellers X-Roads tomorrrow has been postponed because of Tuesday's final.
"We lost some ground in the first half of the season and how I see it, every match for us going forward is important for us," he added. "Every game is important and we have to keep our focus on our primary goal of being consistent and gaining promotion.
"In the first half of the season we had a lot of unnecessary draws (four) but have improved since then. And if we can keep winning then I think we should be in good shape."
Meanwhile, in other First Division matches tomorrowl, Prospect take on Ireland Rangers at Police Field, Wolves host Paget at Devonshire Recreation Club while St.David's do battle with Young Men's Social Club at Lords.
BAA have a bye this weekend while the game between St. George's and Somerset Eagles has been postponed.
n Dandy Town defeated Devonshire Cougars 2-0 in a December 17 Dudley Eve clash at Somerset Cricket Club and not Boulevard as was reported yesterday.
