Trojans secure promotion after mauling Rangers
Ireland Rangers 0
Somerset Trojans 8
Nerves, what nerves?
Normally teams chasing automatic promotion on the last day of the season produce error-strewn performances before either succeeding or failing in the final nerve wracking minutes of the campaign.
Every shot missed turns the tension up a notch, every counter-attack by the opposition brings a sharp intake of breath which is only released when the danger has passed.
Supporters spend more time with their heads in their hands than actually watching the game, such is the way of things when a team has to win to be promoted.
Nobody told Somerset Trojans this, mind you, nobody told Ireland Rangers that their role was party poopers. Instead, Trojans strolled to an emphatic win in the mid-day sun, and Rangers disintegrated around them.
From Adrian Burrows' first minute goal, to Tahj Wade's strike in the 89th, Trojans dominated the game and could have run their total into double figures.
Rangers will claim that Burrows' goal was offside, and maybe it was, but with assistant referees Anthony Mouchette and Richard Knights failing to turn up to the game, it was left to referee Tracey Adams and two members of the crowd to do the best they could.
The home side still had –89 minutes to get back into the game, but rather than rallying around each other, they started to fight instead. Boss Dwayne DeRosa hauled off Nathan Darrell after just 17 minutes because of his attitude, and was threatened with being shot for his trouble.
Darrell's replacement Curtis Gavin didn't last much longer, and was sent off minutes into the second half when he aimed a punch at Trojans' Duante Darrell.
In fact, Rangers were lucky not to be down to ten men before half time. Substitute Lloyd Telford, on for the injured Jensen Rogers, had been on the field less than a minute when he scythed down Zhakie Iris with an ugly challenge. A booking was the very least he deserved.
By that time Trojans were already two goals up, with Dwight Basden grabbing his first ten minutes before the break. After half time Basden added a second, while Wade and Jelani Butterfield also grabbed two. There was even time for second half substitute Shane Basden to get in on the act.
So Trojans will be playing Premier Division football come September, and for boss Dennis Brown, the work is just beginning.
"We'll enjoy this for the next week, but then we have the Shield Final to play, so we are still chasing more silverware,' said Brown. "But after that, the real work will only just be beginning, because it's going to be a lot tougher next season for us."
n Elsewhere, goals from Clay Darrell, Quincy Paynter and Quincy Jones guided Young Men's Social Club to a 3-0 win over BAA at Bernard Park.
Makao Astwood, Uthmani Talbot and Farid El-Karfa all notched goals for X'Roads as they beat Prospect 3-2 at Police Field. Prospect's scorers were Carlton Williams and Dennis Joell. St. George's beat Paget 5-0 at White Hill Field to finish the season strong, while First Division champions Somerset Eagles didn't have to suit up as they won by default over Wolves.
