Trojans skipper hails side's desire
Somerset Trojans skipper Jelani Scott hailed his side's desire as they capped off a memorable season with a fine performance at the National Sports Centre, beating St. David's 3-1 in the Shield final.
Having already confirmed their status in the top flight next year, Trojans added the Shield to their list of achievements this season which also includes a heart-breaking penalty shoot-out loss to rivals St. George's in the First Division Dudley Eve final.
Dominating for long spells, the men from Cricket Lane were the deserved winners on the day but Scott was quick to admit that his team started off sluggish before stepping up a gear.
"The first half we came out a bit slow and flat, and didn't really come into the game until the last 15 minutes or so of the first half and really creating some good opportunities," said Scott.
"We went down 1-0 and our mind frame didn't change, we had to stick to our game plan and get back into the game.
"We had the talent to get back into the game and came back into the game with our first goal and from there I knew we would win the match.
"They tried to unsettle us early and did a good of that, but they seemed to die off a little bit and we imposed our game."
Considering that St. David's played on Wednesday night, Scott's reasoning could very well have some truth in it.
But it was the Islanders who drew first blood in the 17th minute when miscommunication between two Somerset defenders allowed skipper Dejuan Paynter to slip by them and beat Sherwin Hall to make it 1-0.
The goal was totally unexpected with Trojans camping in their opponent's area for long spells trying to fashion an opening that never came until just before the half.
Somerset earned a corner kick which and was met by Adrian Burrows at the near post, where he flicked the ball home to level matters on the stroke of half-time.
St. David's were more in the match in the second half with Angelo Cannonier and Sean Boddington going close to putting their side ahead, but the telling blow was struck in the 77th minute when a harmless free kick was allowed to go untouched into the St. David's area.
Dwight Basden was on hand to plant his header past goalkeeper Jevon Minors to make it 2-1.
Soon after Basden was bought down by Frederick Sewell inside the box for a penalty. Scott calmly stepped up and placed the ball to Minors' left, putting the match out of St. David's reach.
"In the first few minutes the guys seemed to be a bit nervous, but we have a young team and that tends to happen in games like this, but credit to them for stepping up and sticking to the plan," continued Scott.
"We need to keep the same commitment as we have all season and take it into next season. We have to improve on things and stay focused more and cut out the little mistakes that can cost us in the premier. But commitment is key and we will be alright."
