Trojans' skipper: Victory will cap off super season

Somerset Trojans captain Jelani Scott (left) challenges Boulevar's Angelo Simmons.

Skipper Jelani Scott is confident newly promoted Somerset Trojans have what it takes to complete a memorable season by lifting the First Division Shield when they take on St. David's on Sunday at the National Sports Centre.

Scott, who has spent his whole career at the West End club, said there was no danger of his young team letting their foot off the gas just because they had already regained their top-flight status.

"We're approaching this game with the same seriousness as all the other games so far," said Scott.

"Of course, there is an added incentive to win because it is a cup final. Preparation for the game is going well and everyone is motivated to give their all and to put on a good show.

"Since gaining promotion the players are looking forward to next season.

"Because we have such a young team, for many of them it would be their debut in the top flight.

"The youngsters have put in a lot of hard work over the course of the season and promotion is a just reward for their efforts.

"They've improved greatly over the season and the last few games have been enjoyable for them. Everyone is enjoying their football at the moment and confidence is high in the team right now."

Their opponents in Sunday's final, St. David's, will surely be looking to take revenge on Trojans who denied Warriors automatic entry into the Premier Division on goal difference on the final day of the season.

But Trojans stalwart, Scott, just wants his team-mates to focus on what they need to do.

"If we happen to lose in the final it would be a disappointment, but it would not be the end of the world. I have seen a lot of positives come out of this season.

"The fact that we made it to two finals and gained automatic promotion is a big accomplishment. However, we are only concentrating on victory and what we have to do to bring that trophy to Somerset. That is the mentality of the coaches and players.

"I'm sure they will use us being automatically promoted instead of them as an incentive to defeat us in the final.

"But that does not matter as we're fully concentrated on our own objectives set by coach Brown and Brian Iris."
