Tucker asked to return

Janeiro Tucker: Could be back in the national cricket team if he is declared fully fit after a troublesome knee injury.

If Bermuda coach Arnold Manders has his way, then Janeiro Tucker will be in the 19-man squad for the ICC Americas Regional Championships that will be named tomorrow.

Somerset's all-time leading Cup Match run scorer retired from the national team last year, but with Bermuda's middle order struggling for runs, Manders is hoping to convince the explosive batsman to come out for one last hurah.

Whether he does or not will depend on how his knee has responded to an operation he underwent this winter to cure a particularly nasty case of patella tendonitus. Tucker is due to meet with national team physio Craig Brown today to see how the knee is progressing.

"Right now, I have to see how my knee is really," said Tucker. "I haven't really thought about it (coming back) right now, but I have to speak to the physio and get it checked up further.

"I haven't given it too much thought ever since I retired and had the knee operation, but I've talked to Arnold about playing again and I said it was a case of seeing what I can do on the field."

For Tucker it won't be a case of just being able to play again, it will be about being able to play at international level well enough to satisfy the professional pride he takes in his game.

"Playing international and domestic cricket is two different games," he said. "Domestic you can get away with it (not being fully fit), and international you can't. I still have a lot to offer in the sport, I don't think I am finished yet. It's just that the injuries took their toll, which it's why I gave it up.

"My knee's not really fully healed and once I get re-assesed on Monday, and in the next few weeks, then I'll know from there."

A lot has changed in the national set-up since Tucker walked away from the team, not least the introduction of a no-nonsense approach to training, driven by Manders and new coach David Moore.

Tucker has paid little attention to what has been happening there, instead focusing on getting fit but if he is to return the expectations placed on him are likely to play a big part in any decision.

"Really don't know, I have really been following anything, like I said, once I gave it up, I didn't think any more about it," he said. "If I do decide to comeback I'll have to see how things are going to be."

That though is all in the future, right now he needs to get his knee fully healed and see how hard he can push it in training.

"I've had a little bit of pain in it, it's not fully healed and there's still a long way to go," he said. "It's bearable for now, and I don't know what it would be like once I start playing again.

"I've been doing a good bit of work on my own, and with Browny, but I really haven't pushed it. Once I push it, then I'll be able to see."
