Two wins will see us safe, says Smith

Devonshire Colts boss Keishon Smith has called on his side to get positive results in their next two league games, starting this weekend against Somerset Eagles, as they look to put some distance between themselves and the relegation zone.

Colts are three points above second-from-bottom Hamilton Parish and three points behind Southampton Rangers, who Parish play at Wellington Oval tomorrow.

Smith believes that two wins will be enough to get themselves out of danger, and with a date with Parish next week, the next couple of weeks could go a long way to deciding who goes down.

"It is a very important two weeks ahead for us and regardless of what anyone else does if we can get two positive results in our next two matches then relegation shouldn't be a situation for us," said Smith.

"We are going to fight to the end, we have been in this position before with our experiences last season.

"Regardless of what expectations you have for the season to come, the second half of the season is the business end and you have to put your best foot forward in order to get the desired results.

"If you can start putting together some good results this time of year, it separates you from those around you either in the relegation zone or chasing the league title."

A win against Eagles tomorrow would go a long way to ensuring Colts' safety, and with their opponents also in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, Smith believes there is a no better time to play them.

"Eagles are a good team, excellent coach and some good players and they have their own aspirations," said Smith.

"I assume they are safe, but a lack of focus on their part considering they are safe from relegation, and may well have their minds on their FA Cup semi final coming up, could be our advantage.

"At the end of the day we will bring our best game and any mental lapse in focus or things of that nature. Our destiny is in our own hands and that is the good thing about our situation."

The Devonshire club have been a much-improved side this season compared to last when they narrowly avoid relegation.

And Smith believes that an increase in confidence is the chief difference in the squad.

While they are in the same situation they were in last year, albeit a better position this time around, Smith is adamant that the side has learned from last year's debacle and is confident that they have what it takes to stay up.

"Confidence is the main difference between the side now and the side that started the season.

"We have the confidence to go out and get a certain job done which is why we are in the position we are in, it gives you team harmony and togetherness in what you do.

"We have an excellent bunch of young guys that are looking to learn and the only way you can get better is to consistently doing what you are doing.

"My hat goes off to my boys, I don't know too many players that would go a whole season without a win and take the both the physical and mental abuse they did last year and still come back ready to get down to business.

"We are a testament to that, and I am pleased the guys stuck around and are mentally strong to come back this year.

"All the work we have done so far comes down to the next two games."

In the match of the day and serious title implications on the line, North Village travel St. John's Field to take on Dandy Town with the sides separated by just two points at the top of the table.

Village will be looking to take over the lead the summit after their heart breaking loss to Devonshire Cougars midweek in the FA Cup semi final, while Town can all but assure the title with a win.

Elsewhere, Devonshire Cougars will visit Southampton Oval to take on PHC while Somerset Trojans and Boulevard tackle at Somerset Cricket Club.
