Tyrone aiming for another monster leap
CAC Games golden boy Tyrone Smith has targetted another podium finish at this weekend's Continental Cup as he aims to maintain his medal-winning momentum ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
Long jumper Smith, a part-time car salesman, was called up to the star-studded Americas Cup squad after winning the gold medal with a jump of 8.22 metres at last month's CAC Games in Puerto Rico.
Since he leapt into the history books, Smith's form has wavered slightly, finishing sixth at the ISTAF Berlin (7.83m), seventh at IAAF World Challenge in Italy (7.73m) and third at the Palio della Quercia Track Meet (7.73m).
But the Houston-based athlete, who linked up with his Americas Cup team-mates, including household names Asafa Powell, Walter Dix and David Oliver, in Croatia yesterday, remains confident of a top three finish if he can jump anything like his best.
"I haven't marked 8 metres since the CAC Games but I know I can do it," said Smith, who reiterated his gratitude to the Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) and Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) for their continued support.
"My last three jumps have been less than par for me but there were different circumstances behind each of them.
"The first meet I was slightly injured, the second meet I just couldn't find my marks and did some fouls, and at the third meet the winds were ridiculous.
"My body had been trained to peak at the CAC Games and hopefully I can peak out again at the Continental Cup. I'm also looking to (peak) at the Commonwealth Games but it's hard to peak out at the right time, each time."
Smith has set his sights at jumping at least 8.15m in Croatia on Saturday which he believes would be enough to land him a podium place.
"It's the end of the season and everyone's tired so you never know what might happen," he said. "I've been competing against the best guys in the world recently and, based on what everyone's jumping, if I can execute 8.15 then I could be within a solid chance of finishing in the top three."
He added: "It's really cool to be on the same team as a lot of these top guys and hopefully I can go out there and pick up some points to win this thing."
Formerly known as the IAAF World Cup, the Continental Cup event takes place every four years and sees teams from Africa, the Americas, Australasia and Europe compete against each other. It is the only World Cup-style event contested by teams representing entire continents rather than individual nations.
Smith will compete at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi next month.
