UAE get ready for visit to Bermuda
The UAE cricket team have begun preparations for their Bermuda tour next month with an early coaching camp in the scorching heat.
Speaking to Gulf News in Dubai, UAE team coach Collin Wells said: "We have been training for the last four weeks and we are expecting a good result from the tour."
Wells was speaking at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium where he was watching the Sharjah inter-school cricket tournament final and scouting for new talent.
"We want to return with a good result from Bermuda," Wells said.
"The International Cricket Council (ICC) Intercontinental Shield four-day game against Bermuda from July 5 is the most important match of the tour.
"If we can do well in that match then we can reach the final of this shield.
"The final of the shield is to be held in UAE this November and so it is important that we beat Bermuda.
"The other finalist could be either Uganda or Namibia. So our focus will be on the four-day match."
UAE would also play two one-day matches and one Twenty20 match against Bermuda during the tour, he said.
"We have discussed the various approaches needed from the players to the different formats though we play mostly 50-overs and Twenty20 matches in domestic cricket here," he said.
"Our focus will be on the four-day game and as we start off the tour with it before moving on to play the one-day matches and the Twenty20 game," said Wells, who has played for England against Australia and Pakistan.
The UAE selectors have included four new faces such as Swapnil Patil, Tahir Butt, Saqib Shah and Mois Shahid.
"We have four new players and they are excited about getting a chance to play international cricket. I am sure they should do well during the tour," Wells said.
When asked about the strength of the team, Wells said: "Our main strength will be our spin attack".
"The conditions in Bermuda will be hot and humid and we are also training under the same conditions here. I feel the wicket in Bermuda may help our spinners."
