Umpires feared for safety of batsmen

Yesterday's Premier Division limited overs match involving PHC and Police at White Hill Field was abandoned due to a hazardous pitch.

Shortly after PHC opener Fiqre Crockwell was struck in the face grill by a Nigel Gittens delivery, that stood up from a good length, umpire Oscar Andrade and the two opposing captains decided best to call it a day after only 12 overs of play with the home team on 47 for two.

Andre Manders, PHC's player/coach, said the premature ending left some players fuming and many questions unanswered as to the poor state of the pitch.

"It was very unfortunate the match had to be abandoned because both teams really wanted to play. But the umpire deemed the pitch unfit for play," said Manders.

"Normally the pitch at White Hill plays good but this time it just couldn't stand up and there were divots coming out of the clay which was soft at one end and hard at the other."

Both teams had considered abandoning proceedings as early as the sixth over after the ball started "jumping all over the place" but continued until national team batsman Crockwell was struck in the helmet.

"It was a nice game of cricket at first but gradually the pitch began to deteriorate and when Fiqre got hit that was it. The umpire called the captains together and everyone agreed to abandoned the match to ensure the safety of the players," added Manders.

It remains to be seen whether the match will be rescheduled once Bermuda Cricket Board review the umpire's match report.

Somerset 185-9

Southampton Rangers 186-4

Player/coach Janeiro Tucker smashed an unbeaten half-century and left arm orthodox spinner Dwayne Leverock claimed four wickets to inspire Belco Cup champions Southampton Rangers to a convincing six-wicket win over Somerset at Southampton Oval yesterday.

Leverock was at his best with the ball as he snatched four for 33 off nine overs that included two maidens to help keep the visitors below 200.

The larger than life spinner collected the prized scalps of Jermaine Warner (45) and Somerset skipper Jacobi Robinson for a golden duck in his third over with successive deliveries after both batsmen failed to pick his stock arm ball.

Leverock then had Trinidadian Rahul Khan (12) and Hasan Durham (10) trapped leg before as Somerset slipped from the comfort of 60 for one to 113 for five in the space of 12 overs.

Also in double figures for Somerset was number seven bat Reid Jones who stroked 30 and added 32 runs for the eighth wicket with Durham before Leverock made the big breakthrough in his second spell.

The mercurial Tucker then picked up where his former national squad team-mate left off with the bat, thumping 11 boundaries off 69 balls to keep his team on course for victory.

Seamer Khan (two for 20) made the early breakthrough to reduce Rangers to 64 for three. But in Tucker, the visitors ran into a brick wall as the veteran all-rounder raced to his half-century off 41 balls and along with Gerald Simons (24) added 91 runs for the fourth wicket.

Also making promising starts at the top of the order was Dion Stovell who belted seven boundaries in a 19-ball 34 and shared in a 57 run opening partnership with Curtis Jackson (16).

St. David's 257-6

PHC 150

Skipper and all-rounder Delyone Borden turned in outstanding performances with bat and ball in leading St. David's to this emphatic 107-run Premier Division limited overs victory over PHC at Lord's on Saturday.

Borden first tore apart PHC's bowling attack with a stroke-filled undefeated innings of 82 to spearhead his team's innings, hitting eight fours and two sixes.

Borden and Angelo Cannonier (42) added 117 for the sixth wicket.

Charles Symons was the best bowler for the visitors with two for 39 off 10 overs.

PHC were then dismissed in 48.4 overs as Spinner Borden snatched two for 15 in 10 overs with three of them maidens. Del Hollis took two for 26 off 10 while medium pacer Cannonier collected two for 29 off nine overs.
