Union losers no more on night of sweet revenge

Union defender Josh Butterfield hailed his side's performance in the Island Soccer League championship game on Thursday night, calling the victory 'sweet revenge' as they defeated 2008 champions Storm 8-6 to lift their maiden title at the National Sports Centre.

The match was reminiscent of last year's final, with the two teams throwing everything they had in their arsenal at each other as the Storm won 5-4 in overtime.

This time around however, it was the Union who had the last laugh as they won this year's title also in overtime.

Butterfield, who was a part of the 2008 runner-up side, believes his side was the better on the day and that it was his side's mentality of not being the bridesmaids twice in successive years that proved a motivational tool.

"It was a good game that went back and forth, but I feel we worked harder and were deserved of the win," said Butterfield.

"We wanted it more then them.

"It is sort of a redemption thing as we lost to them in over time, so it was our mindset that it wouldn't be two years in a row to lose in this way.

"It feels good to win this year, especially getting a chance to play the champions from the year before that beat us.

"It was sort of redemption from last year, we felt we had to beat them."

Seemingly having the match in the bag at 3-1 at the beginning of the fourth quarter and no way back for the defending champions, a five-minute lapse of concentration saw the scores level and the match going into overtime.

However, goals from Jahnai Raynor, Ryan Nesbitt and Lamal Crofton effectively put the game beyond the champions reach at 8-5, although Raymond Beach scored a late goal to make the final score 8-6.

Buttefield stated the title was a just reward for the side that had to cope without a coach and at times playing short-handed, with only their belief in each other being carrying them to the title.

"We had a lead that we thought we could maintain, but our defensive lapses allowed them back in.

"So going into the overtime period, we wanted to cut out these mistakes that were costing us and be more consistent in the overall scheme of the game.

"Next year we will have the target on our back, but we won't change too many things from this year apart fro the obvious things.

"Playing our own game has got us this far so that will continue.

"We have had trials and tribulations from the outset with not having a coach and playing for ourselves.

"The guys play for one another and with everything we have gone through to win this shows we have a team that plays for each other and puts everything on the line every week.

"I have only one thing to say. UNION!"
