University honour for Bermuda's Smith

Shianne Smith is seen here being honoured by three of Bermuda's greatest track and field athletes at the BFTA's banquet last year. Pictured are Acting Sports Minister Zane DeSilva presenting Smith with her Under-20 Athlete of the Year award, and stars triple jumper Brian Wellman (far left), 200m and 400m runner Troy Douglas (second from right) and high jumper Clarence (Nicky) Saunders (far right).

Shianne Smith has been voted California State University Women's Athlete of the Week after winning the long jump at the Run For The Dream indoor meet in Fresno at the weekend.

Smith, who has qualified for the CAC Games in Puerto Rico later this year, won the long jump with a leap of 5.83 metres – an National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) provisional qualifying mark.

Elsewhere overseas, middle distance runner Aaron Evans helped the University of Georgia to second place in the 4x400m with a provisional NCAA qualifying time of 3.09.96, at the Virginia Tech Elite meet in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Evans' university team-mate, Latroya Darrell, finished ninth in the triple jump (12.25) and high jump (1.69).

Also at the weekend, Alison Outerbridge qualified to the A standard of the Carifta Games in the triple jump at the National Sports Centre with a leap of 12.0m.
