Village forced to settle for second place despite victory over Eagles

Goals in each half by skipper Sammy DeGraff and Ralph Bean saw North Village make a spirited attempt to win the Premier Division title against Eagles at White Hill field yesterday, but in the end they had to settle for second place after Dandy Town blew away PHC by a two-goal margin to snatch the championship at Southampton Oval.

Village entered the contest fully aware that they not only had to win but had to count on PHC dumping one-point leaders Town in their match-up at Southampton Oval – but on this day PHC were unable to do any favours for Village.

Disappointment could be seen all over the Village players' faces when it was over, but coach Shaun Goater was rather upbeat based on his team's overall impressive performance to snatch maximum points in such a crucial game – accomplishing this tough task while facing a credible second and still having the FA Cup to add to their season conquest it may end up being a rather successful season.

"Congratulations to Dandy Town who are champions of the league and had a great season, they have some quality players like us and credit to them. We just were unfortunate that draw against Southampton Rangers was the defining moment, but that's the way it turned out. We have the F.A. Cup final, we've done well through the season and now have one final game, so we are looking forward to that. We have to dust ourselves off. We had a quality performance today in terms of our quality of ball control and quality of creativity, so I am pleased cause it's a good way to end the league season." said Goater.

"We had the title in our hands and were in control of our own destiny but we just fell short. Town had the resilience to persevere and take the title. But we have won a trophy and in with a chance to win another while finishing second in the league, so we are pleased. We blooded a lot of youngsters this season, we have come through and the future does indeed look bright for the club."

Against middle of the table Eagles, Village fought hard to gain the upperhand. They controlled the possession during the opening half when they found the home team struggling to settle down and losing possession time and time again when they entered deep into Village's territory.

After 22 minutes Ralph Bean hammered a shot from 15 yards that thundered against the chest of Eagles' keeper Tahj Bell and two minutes later teenager Terryn Fray headed a free kick by full-back Justin Sousa that Bell smartly managed to push away.

Village appeared to be taking control at this stage but Eagles stormed back and Aquino Grant missed a chance to score when he attempted to control a ball yards away from goal instead of volleying – the ball eventually being cleared by the defence.

But the inevitable opener for Village came after 39 minutes when DeGraff smartly headed home a cross from Bean, giving them a 1-0 lead at the half.

Play was more intense after the break with Eagles showing no signs of their sub-standard opening half display and matching Village for long spells – thanks to some creative work in the middle by hard-working Keishen Bean and Troy Tucker. But Village remained very competitive and were able to step up their game when required to do so.

After 55 minutes Ralph Bean drilled a 20-yarder straight at goalkeeper Bell but Eagles responded shortly afterwards when Aldolphus Lambert forced Jason Williams in the Village goal to tip over his fierce 18 yarder.

After 73 minutes substitute Tyrell Burgess should have made it 2-0 for Village but he placed his 16-yard blast over the goal.

Village though maintained the pressure and Ralph Bean was in position to deliver what proved to be the killing blow that floored Eagles, steering the ball home from close in after 73 minutes.

Substitute Jason Lee followed up with a blast that sailed off the chest of Bell in the Eagles goal ten minutes later, but by then Village were almost assured of victory.
