Virgil posts PB at Worlds
Bermuda sprinters Kyle Virgil and Shawnae Brangman were unable to progress from the heat stages of the 200 metres in the IAAF World Championships in Italy.
Virgil, though, can be proud of his display with the youngster recording a personal best time of 22.42 in Sudtriol on Friday.
Of the six athletes who competed at the high quality international event, Henry Stevens-Carty produced the best display, reaching the semi-finals of the 800 metres earlier in the competition.
Bermuda Track and Field president Donna Watson said the local contingent had always been facing an uphill struggle against some of the finest young athletes in the world.
"I am sure the athletes gave one hundred percent but up against the best in the world in the youth category we knew it was not going to be easy," she said.
"I think Henry (Stevens-Carty) had a good competition and this should bode well for him as he will be competing in the Pan-Am Junior Championships in a few weeks.
"We hopefully will be putting some new things in place for the next season that will begin to get our athletes even more prepared for international competition."
Later this month promising young athletes Tyrone Smith and Shainne Smith will be competing in Columbia where they will be accompanied by Bermuda's former world indoor triple jump champion Brian Wellman.
Then, nine athletes will be gunning for glory at the Pan-Am Junior Championships in Trinidad and Tobago from July 31 to August 2.
Watson, who was appointed the new president of the BTFA in February, said she had been relatively pleased with the results of Bermuda's athletes so far this season.
"This has been a very long season for our athletes but I wanted to make sure that we gave them all of the opportunities available," she said.
"I think overall we have come out with some good results from the Carifta Games, CAC Age Groups Championships, CAC Seniors and I think we have a lot to build on for next year.
"We are receiving a lot of support and I'm pleased with my first four months as president and look forward to continuing our improvement."
