Wade-Gray stars again as Lady Mocs lift title
Bermudian Jenaya Wade-Fray helped the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga win their 13th Southern Conference Tournament Championship with a 72-67 victory over Samford in the final on Monday night.
The title win, the eighth under coach Wes Moore, confirms the university's place in the field of 64 for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament and keeps intact their 13-0 record in the tournament finals.
Trailing by 11 with 11 minutes left in the game, the Lady Mocs went on a 17-4 run to take control of the game.
Wade-Fray, a second team All-Tournament player, scored 11 points, six of which came from behind the three-point line and now needs just five more to pass Katasha Brown for second all-time record in three-pointers in school history.
She also extended her record by playing in her 130th career game.
On their way to the tournament title, they saw off UNC-Greensboro 82-64 before beating Georgia Southern in the semis 60-49.
Their record after the tournament win is now 24-8 with a place in the Kansas City bracket and a date against West Virginia projected to be their destination when the NCAA tournament kicks off.
Bermuda's Erica Woods didn't have such a great night as her Marshall University fell short of advancing to the second round of the Conference-USA tournament as they lost 59-57 to the University of Central Florida.
Marshall turned over the ball 27 times, a stat that almost guarantees a loss for any side.
The school end the season with a 14-16 record.
