'Watch out for Bay' says Trott

Rodney Trott: The Bailey's Bay captain believes his club will continue to improve after earning promotion yesterday.

Triumphant Bailey's Bay skipper Rodney (Picnic) Trott yesterday attributed dedication and harmony as the driving forces behind his team's stellar season which saw them clinch the First Division championship and with it promotion to top flight cricket.

Bay finished second to none in league play this summer and having now achieved their primary objective, skipper Trott is confident he and his team-mates can become a dominant force in local cricket in the not-too-distant future.

"In three years' time Bailey's Bay will be the best team in Bermuda by far," he declared. "I think we can be a force in the Premier Division next season because we have depth.

"I always knew we could pull it off (promotion) with the experience and youngsters we have in our team. We have a lot of national squad players in our team as well as a few youngsters from the Under-19 national team and most importantly we have team harmony."

Trott returned to his roots at Sea Breeze Oval at the beginning of the 2008 season following a stint at nearby St.George's and was immediately burdened with the added role of captaining a Bay team going through a rebuilding phase.

The Under-19 World Cup veteran proved equal to the task and he now looks forward to leading Bay in their next challenge.

"We have the talent at Bay and it feels great to win the league and be promoted to the Premier Division," Trott added.

"We have worked extremely hard throughout the season and I would like to thank our fans for supporting us, and the players who put in the hard work to make it all happen."

Bay's final match of the season against Leg Trappers at Sea Breeze Oval yesterday fell victim to heavy showers which forced postponement of the match, the latter desperately needing to win to stand any chance of overhauling PHC for the second and final promotion spot.

Also celebrating yesterday was PHC stalwart Cal Waldron who took promotion all in stride and attributed the arrivals of wrist spinner David (Chick) Adams and specialist batsmen Jason Anderson and Fiqre Crockwell as the key components to his team's successful campaign.

"I think the addition of new players we had this year was key for us. Chick was definitely key for us while Jason and Fiqre helped us in the runs department as we managed to score more runs this season than we usually do," he told The Royal Gazette.

The veteran all-rounder was a member of the last PHC squad that enjoyed Premier Division status and says he looks forward to renewing past rivalries with some of the Island's top cricketers.

"It's good to be back in the Premier Division where we will now have to work harder and be more consistent. But I'm looking forward to the challenge," Waldron added.

Meanwhile, on Saturday St.George's were relegated to the First Division when Somerset were awarded the points against Southampton Rangers who showed up at Somerset Cricket Club with only six players.

At Police Field, hosts Police claimed the fourth and final Belco Cup qualifying berth despite having their match with Cleveland washed out. Both teams were awarded a point each after the pitch was deemed unfit for play as a result of heavy overnight rain which seeped under the covers.

Police, whose final match of the season against Rangers did not get underway yesterday at Southampton Oval due to a scheduling conflict, will now face against league champs Young Men's Social Club, Rangers and Cleveland in next season's Belco Cup.

Elsewhere yesterday, the First Division encounter at Somerset Cricket Club between Willow Cuts and Warwick was postponed with the latter showing up with only two players.
