We can avoid the drop, says Warriors' coach

St. David's Warriors' new coach Jack Castle is cautiously optimistic his side have what it takes to avoid the drop in their first season back in the top flight by continuing to play attacking football.

The Islanders, who won the First Division title last season by two points over rivals St. George's Colts, have boosted their chances of survival by signing Angelo Cannonier and Tareek Webb from Hamilton Parish, along with Drewonde Bascome and Keemo Bean from Boulevard.

And Castle, who coached the Warriors for the second half of last season, is confident the same players who achieved promotion are good enough to beat relegation.

"I coached the side the second half of last year and we managed to get the promotion spot," said the former PHC assistant.

"Our main objective is to survive in our first season, St.David's have been up a few times and have gone right back down so we will look to stay in the top-flight and then look to build from that.

"We want to have a good finish in the middle of the pack and look to do well in all competitions.

"Coming back is Angelo but we didn't have a lot of new guys come in. This could be a good thing because from the talent we had last year I think we will be okay.

"St. David's have a lot of raw talent and it's for (assistant coach) Wayne Henry and myself to nurture it."

Making no qualms about the style his team will play regardless of the opposition, Castle is adamant St. David's will look to win games, although the onus will also be on not losing any.

Given Castle's track record of attacking, enterprising football, it seems unlikely their opponents will take St.David's lightly this season.

"St. David's will be an attacking team this year, with me coming from PHC, we will look to create chances and be competitive against the top teams in the country," said Castle.

"Wayne has come in and we have looked and talked about strategy and he has the same ideas as I do. We come across as a team and that's important.

"The things I look to implement from last year he wants to as well and the club, from a coaching standpoint is in good hands and can't ask for much better.

"One of the things of having coached at PHC and at other clubs at the senior level you have to teach players both on and off the field.

"We have to focus on what we started last season and look to build on that.

"If we can get an early win against one of the bigger teams then that is what we are looking for.
