We can't afford to lose at home, says Peniston

Bermuda Hogges' defender Jared Peniston (left) challenges for the ball with Wilmington Hammerheads' striker Chris Bagley at the National Sports Centre on Sunday. Peniston believes Hogges' home form will be crucial to their play-off hopes.

Jared Peniston admits Bermuda Hogges can't afford any more slip-ups in front of their own supporters if they intend to reach the USL-D2 play-offs.

Hogges picked up just one point from their double-header against Wilmington Hammerheads and missed out on going joint top of the table.

Peniston, arguably Hogges' most consistent player this season, has called for his team-mates to put their disappointing weekend behind them and get their campaign back on track when they host Real Maryland Monarchs later this week.

"We've only come out with one point from our two home games at the weekend so something needs to change," Peniston said. "In our huddle before all home matches we emphasise that this is our house and we must protect that advantage, but we haven't done so."

Hogges gifted Hammerheads their winner early in the second period on Sunday night before launching a spirited fightback but couldn't find the equaliser they were looking for.

And Peniston conceded that Hogges squandered a great opportunity to fire a warning shot at the rest of league to show they could be a genuine force this season.

"We could have won the (second) game (against Hammerheads) if we would have put our chances away," said Peniston.

"We needed to win this game to give us a big boost for the rest of season, knowing we had beaten one of the better teams in the league. We played with a lot of heart, but in the end didn't get the job done."

"The main purpose of these two games was to send notice to the rest of the league that we are serious and intend on competing for honours come season's end."

Real Maryland Monarchs visit Hogges on Friday and Peniston is backing his team-mates to return to winning ways.

"Teams will find out that this is our house and we won't let anyone else come here and get points from us," he added.

Coach Kyle Lightbourne is hoping injured striker Lloyd Holder and Jamie Smith will be available for selection.

"We should be getting a few players back from injury like Lloyd Holder and Jamie Smith. Then there's Stevie Astwood who I thought we missed against Hammerheads in the second game following his red card.

"Antwan Russell had a tough game against Hammerheads and had a difficult job. I thought we probably needed a bit more physical presence up front."

Russell appeared to gesture to a small group of Hogges supporters who had cheered when he was substituted late in the second half.

Hogges take on Monarchs at the National Sports Centre at 8 p.m.

n Bermuda international Tyrell Burgess made his second Vancouver Whitecaps appearance of the season on Saturday. Burgess came on as a second-half substitute in Whitecaps' 2-1 defeat against USL-D1 rivals Rochester Rhinos.

His international team-mate Keishen Bean scored his first goal for his new team Ottawa Fury in their win over Forest City London in the PDL's Victoria Challenge Cup on Sunday.
