Wellman returns for star-studded relay

Legendary Bermuda athlete Brian Wellman is set to roll back the years tomorrow when he competes as part of a star-studded relay team at the World Athletics Day at the National Sports Centre (NSC).

The Island's greatest ever triple jumper will make up a fearsome foursome along with ex-Olympic sprinter Devon Bean and two mystery female athletes, believed to be Katura Horton-Perinchief and Debbie Jones Hunter.

Diver Horton-Perinchief competed for Bermuda at the 2004 Olympics in Athens while Jones Hunter helped set a world record in the 4x200 metres for the Tennessee Tigerbelles at Louisville, Kentucky in 1978.

Bermuda joins 161 other countries in competing in the annual IAAF World Athletics Day. It will be first time in a number of years the Island has participated in the worldwide festival of youth sport, which will see each country stage the event some time this month.

It will be hosted by The Flyers Track Club for all local schools at the NSC from 3 p.m.

Bermuda Track and Field Association (BTFA) president, Donna Watson, is hoping the Bermuda public come out and support the event.

She said: "As of right now we know that the BOA are entering a 4x100m relay team which consists of some of our Olympians including Brian Wellman and Devon Bean.

"The other members are females and I will just say the event they competed in and I am sure you can guess, diving and 100 and 200 metres sprint.

"I think we're going to have a great turn-out for this event as I've received many calls."

As well as enjoying rare performances from some of Bermuda's top former athletes, spectators will also be able to watch the Island's stars of tomorrow in action.

"Of course, we will have all of our Carifta athletes competing and it would be great for the public to see our top junior athletes, especially Jeneko Place," added Watson.

"The children's 4-6 race should be good as we have given out forms to all of the nursery schools so hopefully they will be getting in their May 24 short run."

The IAAF World Athletics Day was launched in 1996 for youngsters who were members of clubs affiliated to IAAF Member Federations.

In recent years the scope of the project has broadened to include the participation of schoolchildren in individual and team competitions.

Watson said: "I did a Google on the IAAF World Athletics Day and several countries have had a successful event and some will be having it on the same day as ours.

"Let's hope everyone comes out and supports it."

Bermuda Football Association as well as all other national sporting bodies have been invited to encourage their athletes to participate in either individual events or enter a relay team in the 4x100 metres.

As of yet, Watson said she had received no responses.

"I haven't at this point heard from any other sport but we have sent them the invitation and in true Bermuda style I'm sure everyone will send in their forms at the last minute."
