Williams looking to Island's future
National Team goalkeeper Jason Williams is a man who truly cares about the state of the football in this country.
Straight off the heels of the 'war' on Trinidad and Tobago for the first rounds of World Cup Qualifying games, Williams has returned to Bermuda to continue planning for his summer soccer camp for youth hosted by Head to Foot, a newly formed charitable organisation.
This is the second endeavour for the 23-year old, who also plays for North Village and the Bermuda Hogges.
After the success of last year's youth camp, academic components were added on to the roster of events.
Entitled "HEAD to FOOT" the camp focuses not only on training potential football stars in a professional setting, but also giving knowledge in the areas of education, health, and culture.
Williams (right) believes that a successful footballer is one who is skilled on the field, makes wise and healthy decisions, and is an all-rounded individual.
The two-week camp for boys aged 11-15 will take place July 21-30, and will host lunch-and-learns on all the tricks of the trade hosted by local football icons.
With the hope of cultivating players that can serve Bermuda on a national level while being all-rounded individuals, children will be accepted based not only on their athletic abilities but also determined by their academic and other qualities.
Coaches with years of experience will be the fellow instructors on the field. Haribo Kamara-Taylor (England) and Jason Gross (USA) will serve as the co-coaches.
Both have years of experience of playing football at the collegiate level with Williams at Howard University. Gross also currently coaches a team of Under-10 girls in Virginia, while Kamara-Taylor, former captain of the Howard University soccer team, plays in a league in Maryland.
Last year, one talented athlete was awarded a grand prize - an all expense paid trip to Spain, where he trained with top European coaches alongside other children from all over the world. This year a similar prize will be awarded, and once again a promising youngster will be whisked away to spend some time training with the best.
Tentative destinations include Brazil or England, and for a couple weeks the lucky young man will be exposed to world-class coaching. True to the Head to Foot aims, the youngster may also be enrolled in academic classes during his stay.
None of last year's achievements would have been possible without the financial assistance of corporate sponsors. Sponsorship has already been coming in for this year's camp.
Companies this year include Ariel Re, Ace Insurance, T.K. Perkins Maintenance, Capital G, and Orbis. For more information about the camp, email headtofoot@gmail.com.
