Brazil 123; Bermuda 124-4

Medium pacers Stacy Babb and Charlene Thompson shared five wickets between them and skipper Terry-Lynn Paynter hit an unbeaten 49 to steer Bermuda to a six-wicket victory over Brazil at the ICC Americas Women's Championship in Florida, writes Colin Thompson.

Babb seized three for 35 off 7.4 overs and Thompson two for 23 off eight as the Brazilians were dismissed in 38.4 overs.

That Brazil managed to reach triple digits owed much to some wayward bowling by a Bermuda attack that tossed down 41 wides.

In reply, Paynter played a genuine skipper's innings, blasting four boundaries in her top knock against an equally wayward Brazilian attack that gave away 40 wides.

Number five bat, Maryellen Jackson, chipped in with 17 before Bermuda sealed victory in the 31st over.

Bermuda's win over Brazil was their first of the tournament after back-to-back losses against Argentina and Canada put paid to the Island's hopes of advancing to the next phase of World Cup qualifiers.

Still, coach Arnold Manders reckoned his charges will have gained something from their experiences in Florida over the past week.

"I thought the girls played well and had we made more runs in our opening two matches we might have won those matches," he reasoned. "We haven't been bowled out yet and I think that in itself is a great achievement."

Bermuda will be playing for pride when they take on Trinidad and Tobago in their final match tomorrow before returning home the next day.
