Women's game gets boost with new BFA league

A revamped women's league will be launched next month complete with draft system and six new teams, the Bermuda Football Association (BFA) have announced.

Set up as a one-year pilot scheme following an in-depth analysis into the failings of the female game, the BFA hope the new format will lead to less one-sided matches and stimulate the interest of more young players.

The season will run from October until April and be for players aged 15 and older, with all matches and training sessions to be held at BFA Field.

BFA technical director Derek Broadley said a number of meetings were held with the clubs during the off-season to determine how best to improve women's football on the Island.

"Under the old system there were a lot of one-sided matches played on poor pitches, no consistent games programme and while the better teams had lots of players others had the bare minimum," he said.

"Hopefully the changes that have been made will attract more players and create a smoother transition from the junior to the senior level."

As part of the restructure, new team names will be created and the six coaches, hand picked by the BFA, will be required to relinquish their club responsibilities during the pilot scheme season.

The coaches will be Jeremy Salaam, Paulos, Niqita Robinson and her assistant Aaron Denkins, Sherwin Jennings and his assistant Malcolm Hewey, Derek (Rocky) Bean and Clay Smith and his assistant Kentoine Jennings. They will have the opportunity to select their players during the player draft later this month.

Broadley added that all of the coaches, selected because of their previous involvement in the women's game, would be required to do the BFA's C Level Licence coaching course.

"It's everyone's belief, that this avenue will give our women's football system, a new start, bring more players out to participate and give younger female players in Bermuda something to strive for," Broadley said.
