Wright claims top honour in Caribbean Laser regatta
Veteran sailor Brett Wright returned home victorious earlier this week after taking overall honours in last weekend's Heineken Caribbean Open Laser Championships in St.Martin.
Wright chalked up three bullets on the way to the coveted title to beat out nearest rival Marku Hamarla by four points in the seven-race (one drop) series.
The Bermudian got his championship bid off to a flyer, winning the opening three races to set the early pace before placing second in the fourth and fifth races to keep up the pressure.
Wright lost some momentum when he was disqualified for crossing the start line early in the penultimate race, leaving the door open for the equally consistent Hamarla to make inroads on his lead.
However, his rival failed to capitalise and a solid second-place showing in the final race was enough to land Wright the coveted title after discarding his worst finish (OCS) in the sixth race.
"The plan was to try and be aggressive and see what I could do, and it worked pretty well," said Wright. "I like waves and wind and generally if there's waves I can go pretty fast downwind and make big gains."
In winning the title, Wright managed to surpass his previous best in the international regatta which arrived three years ago when he placed second overall.
"I've always been knocking on the door and made little mistakes here and there. But this time I had to be totally focused and eliminate tactical mistakes because it was shifty and you could lose ground," he added.
Wright acknowledged that his disqualification in the penultimate race could have cost him the title.
"I didn't even find out I was disqualified until after I came back ashore. I knew I was on the edge on all of the starts, but didn't think I was over. I actually finished fifth in that race before I was disqualified and at that point I definitely had some doubts," he said.
"The guy in second (Hamarla) had to win the last two races and in one of them beat me by two boats, but he didn't. I ended up with an OCS (on course side), which I dropped, and so I had to regroup mentally and attack the last race because I still needed a good result in order to win."
Third place honours went to Frits Bus.
There were six countries represented during last weekend's championships, competed for in mostly light air and rolling swells.
